Over the years I have been lucky enough to help many children and their families overcome the problems that young people face. Each unique challenge has its own set of circumstances and may range from separation anxiety, fear of school or problems in school, bed wetting, not sleeping, confidence issues, grief, food matters and many more.
What I do know, is that in the main, results are achieved far quicker if the whole family is able to support the work that the child is doing with me.
In many cases it is not possible to work with the whole family together, but I do insist on meeting the parent(s) in advance of seeing the child if they are younger than 12 years old. For older children, I will have their initial consultation with a parent where this is possible. My reasoning for this, is that if I can explain why the problem exists to the carers too – whilst looking at it from a neurological perspective rather than the difficult event in the child’s life – they are able to understand and support what we then go on to achieve in future sessions.
Problems for our children and teens can be displayed in a myriad of different ways, so if a parent or carer can understand the behaviours and verbal queues, they can then help to support the child through their transition to happiness.
It is also important to recognise, although frequently hard to do, that the young person will often have the resources to solve their problems for them self. It can be very tempting as a parent to want to fix the difficulties for the child, however, when we try to do this we are drawing on our resources as an adult and an individual. And, these may not be the right, or best way of resolving the child’s problem.
Worryingly, we are yet to experience the true impact that the COVID-19 lockdown will have had on our children; but there is no doubt that some will fare better than others – isn’t that always the way? The adolescent brain needs social interaction as part of its development, therefore it is most likely that we will see certain behaviours post lockdown that may be attributed to this.
I am passionate about empowering children to overcome the problems that they face. Together WE talk about creating a “toolkit” that they can take forward in life to help them to manage their problems better. I help them work out and discover how to become more resilient and solution focused in their individual approach to life.
Hypnosis is a natural relaxing state of mind that allows the mind to effectively process information. It is not something that can be “done to you”, but a state of mind that you create yourself with my guidance. Colouring, reading and driving a car are all examples of a natural hypnotic state!
In my work with children we create the same relaxed focused attention through activity and speech; and I combine Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Neuro Linguistic programming (NLP) and SFBT talk therapies with hypnosis to warrant lasting positive change.
