FOOD FREEDOM

I’m a Solution Focused Therapist with a specialist interest in supporting those who have poor relationships with food.

Whether you find that you plan your day around food, or wish to change your body shape or find food freedom I will collaborate with you.

 I work with each client individually and recognise that no one size of treatment suits all. I see clients face to face in Billingshurst and online.

I use modern, evidence based approaches that support positive change including Coaching, NLP, Psychotherapy and Solution Focused Hypnotherapy.  I have worked as a Solution Focused Hypnotherapist for many years and have my own teaching school in Guildford CPHT Surrey however, it was a blog that I wrote about my own experience of living with Anorexia that stemmed my interest in specialising in relationships with food. I have subsequently trained with The National Centre for Eating Disorders and  hold the Master Practitioner, Excellence in Practitioner Skills for Eating Disorders Diploma and Advanced Diploma in Eating Disorders and Obesity. This has allowed me to broaden my offering to those who are struggling.

Weight Management and a desire, or need, to lose weight can be supported. I do not offer a “quick fix” as this in 99% of the population does not last. Supporting effective lasting weight loss is the key to improved health. A commitment and desire to change are needed as the path is often not linear. Unhealthy body sizes are often not solved through food alone although nourishment and physiology create the foundation for lasting change. There are many other considerations that need to  be addressed for heathy weight to be achieved and we will explore these together to create an environment that is supportive of good heath. Working towards a happier healthier future for you.

Disordered Eating is only a problem if it is effecting your health and ability to function normally. This can include eating for reasons other than nourishment or hunger, eating to deal with stress or difficult emotions, cutting calories or restricting food groups or punishing yourself for eating “bad” foods to name a few.  The result is that you are often unhappy and unable to live your life freely.

Eating Disorders often start as a best friend. They come into our lives at a time of crisis when we are vulnerable and feel out of control and offer us the control and safety that we are lacking. They then start to isolate us from the things and people in our lives that we should be able to rely on. Pushing away from loved ones, isolating from friends and stopping us being able to do the things that used to bring us joy. So, the friend who used to make us feel great becomes a friend who controls us and prevents us from being happy. In fact, they become responsible for more crisis and distress, telling us false truths and being mean and bullying. Being able to separate ourselves from the illness and seeing it as a third party can be a significant and important first step.

It must start with working to gain weight and my skill set lies in supporting those who are weight restored but still battling with anxiety and negative and limiting beliefs around food and body image. For support with weight restoration I would refer you to your GP in the first instance and The National Centre for Eating Disorders and Beat Charity will be able to offer more support with this. If you are concerned in any way for yourself or a loved one I will be very happy to offer guidance.

Together we find the way forward that frees you from your “friend’s” control through understanding and re-educating them and ourselves. I recognise that you will know your “friend” best and will also know your best solution to free yourself from their control. It is a collaborative process where we work to remove the problem sticker that has been placed on your ED.  We can then remove any false truths and mis information associated with food and work towards your happier healthier future.

If you are stuck and struggling with anxieties and fear around food then please do get in touch and we can discuss how I think that I may be able to help. Often (especially where malnourishment is concerned) I like to work as part of a supporting team. The priority has to be to re feed and nourish the body and brain.

A problem is only a problem if it is a problem...

I am happy to discuss any issue that you may have associated with food. You do not need to have had a diagnosis. If you are struggling then please get in touch.

On a personal note, my daughter is now at University and doing well. I have learned since writing my original blog that this can be a very long journey. I have had the privilege of meeting  many clients living with eating disorders and learn something new from each and every one. The one thing that I do find is that focussing on the future can be freeing. Once we have restored health many clients choose to use sessions to look at building self esteem, increasing levels of control, reducing anxieties and focusing on other areas in their life away from food.

Areas covered;

Anorexia (once a healthy weight has been obtained), Orthorexia, Bulimia, Binging, Excessive exercising, Weight Management (gaining and losing), AFRID and more….. together we can work towards a happier healthier future. You  must be in good physical health to work with me.
