A Solution-Focused Journey Through Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

When I was younger, I experienced the debilitating effects of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). It began after I contracted glandular fever at 14, and I never fully recovered. At that time, there was little understanding or support for CFS, especially for someone so young. With the exception of an amazing homeopath my mum insisted I see, I had no help.

For years, I struggled silently. Depression and CFS shaped my life, though I didn’t have the language or diagnosis to explain what was happening. I coped as best I could, but in truth, I felt stuck.

The Path to Coping

In my late teens and early twenties, I turned to self-medication through alcohol and kept pushing myself to work, even as a rep overseas. But the cracks started to show when I returned home at 24 and tried to settle into a stable job. By then, the worst of the CFS symptoms had alleviated. Looking back, I believe this happened because I unconsciously gave in to what my body needed most—rest. I allowed myself to sleep, though at the time, I didn’t realise how essential that was.

While the physical symptoms of CFS lessened, I was left grappling with its emotional and mental aftershocks, including depression and a lingering lack of confidence. Over time, I found ways to manage: daily walks, eating well, and avoiding alcohol. These steps helped, but the experience had already changed me. My mum often reflects on how the vibrant, confident child I once was became cautious, low-energy, and unsure of herself.

A New Perspective Through Solution-Focused Hypnotherapy (SFH)

For the first time (some 20 years later), through the insights and techniques of Solution-Focused Hypnotherapy, I’ve found a profound sense of happiness and control. SFH helped me shift my focus from what CFS had taken away to what I could do to move forward.

  • Building on Strengths: SFH helped me rediscover the parts of myself that remained strong and capable, even after years of struggle.
  • Looking Ahead: By focusing on small, achievable goals, I started creating a future that felt hopeful and aligned with the life I wanted.
  • Quieting the Past: While CFS and its aftermath shaped me, SFH allowed me to stop dwelling on the pain of what I had lost and focus instead on what I could gain.

Empathy and Empowerment

The experience of CFS and its long-term effects gave me a deep empathy for others who are facing similar challenges. I know how isolating and life-altering it can be. But I also know that with the right support and tools, it’s possible to rebuild a life that feels fulfilling and balanced.

If I could go back and share what I’ve learned through SFH with my younger self, I would. But instead, I use that knowledge now to help others. Whether it’s offering understanding, practical guidance, or simply hope, I’m here to help those navigating the complexities of CFS find their own way forward.
