Frozen – can it help us to understand an ED?

There are some parallels that can be drawn between Elsa’s story in Frozen and a person struggling with an eating disorder. Both Elsa and some individuals with eating disorders may experience feelings of shame, isolation, and a desire to hide their struggles from others. Like Elsa, individuals with eating disorders may feel a sense of fear and self-doubt, as well as a need to control their behaviour in order to cope with underlying emotional issues. In some cases they can find that they feel that they have created a monster. Elsa created “Marshmallow” the snow monster who defended her ice castle. Although initially she was protected from the world she then became isolated and detached and it became hard for those who cared for her to be let in. Marshmallow protected Elsa from Prince Hans and his army but also fought Anna, Kristoff and Olaf who were trying to help her. Showing that there was no distinction between who was being fought; just a need to protect Elsa.

Additionally, both Elsa and some individuals with eating disorders may face challenges in accepting themselves and seeking help. Elsa’s journey towards self-acceptance and embracing her powers can be compared to the journey of individuals with eating disorders towards self-acceptance and recovery. Both stories highlight the importance of self-compassion, seeking support from others, and finding healthy ways to cope with difficult emotions.

While the comparison is not perfect, as Elsa’s story is fictional and involves magical elements, there are certainly themes and emotions in Frozen that can resonate with individuals struggling with eating disorders. It’s important to remember that each person’s experience is unique, and seeking professional help and support is crucial for those facing challenges with eating disorders.

And, if you are curious, (and you don’t already know) Marshmallow returns to the Ice Palace without Elsa and claims  her crown for himself, once she no longer has a need for him!
