It was October 2019 when I first noticed that we had a problem ( I often ask myself why I hadn't seen the signs earlier, and remind myself that it doesn't matter) and since then we have fought "Damien" (our name for it) and Won!
In performance enhancement, we more often than not are working to harness the power of the brain to help focus more, run faster, or throw further, whilst managing the anxieties that can impair our ability to perform.
It is not necessarily the events in our lives that cause the anxiety, but the way we think about them which cause the problem. Anxiety can occur when we think negatively about the past, present or future. We can feel out of control and no longer ourselves, which is when our ability to enjoy life is then hindered.
In every initial consultation, I explain the theory behind how our brains work. Understanding how our brains respond to different situations, is often the ‘light bulb’ moment when everything falls into place and change can be made.
It became clear that Youlanda just did not understand why you would go for a walk only to return to your starting point. This concept just did not make any sense to her. She explained that if she was going to walk anywhere it had to be to a certain place where she was then going to stay; like work, shopping, seeing a friend etc. Never, just walking for walkings sake.
For many years I have worked with children who are too afraid to go to school; viewing the thought of school as similar to entering a lion's den. Heightened anxieties demonstrated in anger outbursts and emotion among other things.
I don't know about you but there appears to be a great deal of irrational (mindless) behaviour being demonstrated at the moment. I didn't plan to mention Coronavirus but even when I googled the word "panic" in search of images for this blog the top line had Coronavirus. It's everywhere at the moment and it's a problem.
